Hyundai prepares for the most major overhaul of the Porter model in the past decade. The company has started road testing a new generation of the popular light commercial vehicle, which will finally adopt a half-cab configuration. The new design will help Hyundai meet upcoming safety requirements in South Korea, which will take effect in 2027 and apply to light commercial vehicles.

The Porter has been in production since 1977 and remains one of the most popular light commercial vehicles in South Korea. The current fourth-generation model debuted in 2004 and has undergone numerous updates over the years, but the basic cab-over configuration has remained unchanged.

The decision to change the layout of the vehicle came after Hyundai's engineers recognized the lack of a crushable zone in the current design, which would allow the shock of a frontal collision to be transferred directly to the cab. This is considered one of the major drawbacks of vehicles with a cab-over design. The change is aimed at improving the vehicle's safety and meeting the new standards.

The new half-cab configuration is seen as a compromise between safety and practicality. The bonnet will be only slightly larger than before, allowing the manufacturer to preserve the original length of the cargo bed and maintain the ease of use of the vehicle.

However, the modifications are unlikely to be limited to just the design changes. Hyundai may also increase the wheelbase of the vehicle, which could lead to reduced maneuverability in tight urban settings. Additionally, to maintain the size of the cargo bed, the overall length of the vehicle may increase.

The powertrain options will be similar to the current model, with a 2.5-liter turbocharged engine running on liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) likely to remain the mainstay. This engine produces 159 horsepower and 30 kg/m of torque. Hyundai discontinued the diesel version of the Porter in 2023, so the LPG engine is now the primary option for the domestic market.

There will also be a new electric version available. According to preliminary information, the increased wheelbase will allow for more spacious batteries, potentially increasing the range from 217 km to around 300 km. The official specifications of the battery and electric motor are not yet available.

The launch of a new generation of the Porter is a significant event for Hyundai due to increased competition in the market. The company is counting on the new model to regain the popularity it once had. The current generation of the Porter has been on the market for more than 20 years.
